Inspired by people who are forced to wait at airports and train stations during their trip, this clever 4-piece suitcase set can be pieced together to build a two-seater couch.
Twenty-two year old Dutch designer Erik de Nijs (the guy who brought us the keyboard pants), revealed his “Suited Case” project at Dutch Design Week 09 last month. He says “this concept came from a research on nostalgia during travelling. When a familiar object from home is taken with you on a trip you feel much more at ease. And which object is more familiar then your own comfortable couch.” Brilliant idea with a few practical looking pieces for a nice airport nap. Shame about the fabrics!
Whether it is summer or winter, you have to dress in layers and be sure to pack warm clothing in your carry-on. Some airports use air-conditioning when it is not necessary, don’t use air-conditioning when it is necessary or they don’t use heating when it is needed. This could result in some discomfort if you are not prepared, so cover all your bases and be prepared for warm or cool temperatures. At night when there are not as many people moving around, you’ll notice the temperatures will drop. In this self-airportrait, submitted to us by David Santos, he’s all bundled up for a night at Girona airport in Spain in February 2009.
Continuing with dressing for the airport, one of the things that drives me nuts about travelling to the Caribbean in the winter is seeing so many people returning home to Toronto in their beach wear. Have you noticed this? Or maybe its a Canadian thing, since we see so little sun during the winter. It will be January and the flight is already delayed because of brutal snowstorms back home. You would think this would tip people off to wear light pants at the very least. But, no when I get to the gate everyone is still dressed in shorts, tank tops and flip flops. At first I look at my boarding pass again to make sure I’m not at the wrong gate, but I know I’m not. I just shake my head and watch in wonderment as we’re on the plane and they have to ask the flight attendants for more blankets to keep warm. Just wait till you get off the plane my friends.
PS. if you are one of these people, I’m sorry….I just don’t get it :-))
Do you have a photo you took of yourself at an airport? SEND IT IN and I’ll add it to the new photo theme self air-portraits. With the summer travel season well under way, I’m hoping to have a flurry of photos sent in over the next couple months. :-)) I’m off to some interesting airports in South America (again) in August, so I figure I can add about 5 if I really apply myself to the task. Here is Ben’s contribution to the theme…..see how easy it can be everyone!!!
Btw, its ok to cheat and have someone else take the photo for you if you prefer. :-))
