Rule # 12: dress for airport temperatures

airport

Whether it is summer or winter, you have to dress in layers and be sure to pack warm clothing in your carry-on.  Some airports use air-conditioning when it is not necessary, don’t use air-conditioning when it is necessary or they don’t use heating when it is needed.  This could result in some discomfort if you are not prepared, so cover all your bases and be prepared for warm or cool temperatures.  At night when there are not as many people moving around, you’ll notice the temperatures will drop.  In this self-airportrait, submitted to us by David Santos, he’s all bundled up for a night at Girona airport in Spain in February 2009.

Continuing with dressing for the airport, one of the things that drives me nuts about travelling to the Caribbean in the winter is seeing so many people returning home to Toronto in their beach wear.  Have you noticed this?  Or maybe its a Canadian thing, since we see so little sun during the winter.  It will be January and the flight is already delayed because of brutal snowstorms back home.  You would think this would tip people off to wear light pants at the very least.  But, no when I get to the gate everyone is still dressed in shorts, tank tops and flip flops.   At first I look at my boarding pass again to make sure I’m not at the wrong gate, but I know I’m not.  I just shake my head and watch in wonderment as we’re on the plane and they have to ask the flight attendants for more blankets to keep warm.  Just wait till you get off  the plane my friends.

PS. if you are one of these people, I’m sorry….I just don’t get it  :-))

Airport Spotlight: Winnipeg

July 17th, 2008 airport sleeper No comments

Let’s recap a few reasons why people sleep in an airport:

  1. Save money on a hotel room. Sometimes a $200 room isn’t worth the expense and time required shuttling back and forth and checking-in/out for just a few hours.
  2. Flight delay/missed connection
  3. Early morning flight and no public transportation available

Now with this review we can add 4. Just for fun! Read more…

Create your own airport entertainment

July 10th, 2008 airport sleeper 1 comment

Ok, so not every airport is a Singapore Changi or Hong Kong with their free movie theaters, massage chairs, free internet kiosks, WIFI, and spa facilities.   Whether you are in transit or overnighting, if rest and comfort are difficult,  one option would be to read a book or sit there staring at the ceiling while draining your iPod of its power.  That might put you to sleep.  If you are with some friends, though, why not try coming up with a game like Airport Survivor, play Twister (it’s easy to pack), or try luggage cart or wheelchair races (ok, maybe the wheelchair races would be inappropriate),  but you get the idea.  Just use your creativity and the time will go so much faster.  It worked for these guys….. :-))

Policing the airport sleepers

June 28th, 2008 airport sleeper 1 comment

Another photo from Belgium Med, who wasn’t actually arrested…..I’m just being silly.

At some airports, if you are staying overnight, security will check your passport and flight documentation and they may even sign you up on their “sleeper” log (as shown above). I remember when I was in Geneva, two security guards attempted to ask me for my ticket. Not understanding a word of French, I just made hand gestures like I was speaking to a mentally challenged person to indicate a flight taking off. I stopped short of making propeller and zoom zoom noises as well. They seemed to understand I was waiting for my flight to leave because they laughed at me and walked away.
